OSU Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering: Partnering with Industry

Barry Rahimian, ATS, industry donor

The School of Mechanical, Industrial, & Manufacturing Engineering (MIME) at Oregon State values our solid track record of industry partnerships and the many forms these partnerships have taken. We welcome every opportunity to strengthen our existing connections with industry and to develop new relationships—locally, nationally, and worldwide.

If you're serious about wanting to help shape the next generation of mechanical, industrial, and manufacturing engineers, access an exceptional pool of engineering and scientific research talent, and connect with Oregon State's Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering programs in other ways, we want to work with you. This page describes a number of options for industry involvement with OSU MIME students and faculty. Please contact us for more information. And if you have additional ideas for building an industry partnership with OSU MIME, we want to hear about those as well!

Engage with Our Students

Industry members have plenty of opportunities to interact with our students, make a difference in their college experience, and help them develop into outstanding members of the US and global engineering community. For example, you can:

  • Sponsor an MIME senior design project, the capstone experience for Oregon State's engineering students. Industry-sponsored senior projects provide outstanding real-world learning opportunities for our students—and they are also winning arrangements for the sponsoring organizations.
  • Provide student internships. Many companies choose to participate in the College of Engineering's MECOP Program, which places qualified students in 6-month internships with MECOP member organizations. If other kinds of internships better suit your company's needs, we are also happy to help you set them up and assist with your intern recruiting efforts. Note: You may submit MIME-specific, non-MECOP internship postings directly to our MIME Job Board.
  • Make a monetary gift to support ongoing program development here in MIME, or an in-kind donation of equipment, software, or instructional support for one of the hands-on, laboratory-based MIME courses that help make our students work-ready.
  • Present a seminar or workshop here on campus to broaden our students' (and faculty's) perspectives on real-world engineering issues, career options, communication skills, challenges of working on international project teams, and other industry-relevant topics. Or, coordinate an onsite presentation/tour to familiarize our students with your company and its facilities.

Partner with Our Faculty

Our outstanding teaching and research faculty are also interested in connecting with you, sharing their expertise, and developing industrial partnerships. Consider some of the following avenues for industry-faculty interaction:

  • Work with us to establish long-term industry-university research partnerships in specialty areas of interest to your organization. For more information about our faculty's research specialties, visit http://mime.oregonstate.edu/research/.
  • Engage MIME faculty as research fellows at your company. Many of our faculty are on 9-month appointments and are interested in gaining industry experience and exposure through summer research opportunities.

Hire Our Work-Ready Graduates

We gladly support your company's recruiting efforts for qualified mechanical, industrial, and manufacturing engineers in a variety of ways, including:

  • Free job and internship postings on the MIME Job Board
  • Senior dinner (fall term)
  • Industry reception (winter term)
  • Student group presentations (ASME, IIE, SME)

If you have other recruiting interests and needs, please let us know. We'd be glad to help if at all possible.

Join the MIME Industry Affiliates Board

Our MIME Industry Affiliates Board members serve the School of MIME in an advisory role, helping us with program planning, decision making, and direction setting. MIME IAB membership also provides many opportunities for close association with department faculty and students. If your company is not yet represented on the MIME IAB, we welcome your nominations for board membership.

As another high-impact partnership option, consider
a College of Engineering INSPiRE MEMBERSHIP

If your organization is committed both to enhancing OSU engineering students' educational experience AND hiring our graduates, you'll want to consider participating in the CoE INSPiRE Program. Our primary goal with this program is to form mutually productive collaborative relationships with industry partners to enhance the quality of graduating engineers. Membership benefits include a free senior project, complimentary admission to our fall and winter recruiting events, an annual student resume book, priority job and internship postings, increased visibility of your organization on campus, and other opportunties to develop relationships with our faculty, staff, and students.
